Ice on the indoor coil or the thin copper line

Ice means the coil is colder than it should be because too little heat is reaching it. The two ordinary reasons are a choked filter or blower, and a low refrigerant charge after a leak. We check the filter and blower wheel first. If airflow is normal and the suction line is still icing, we look for a leak at the flares before any gas is added. Running an iced unit for days can damage the compressor because liquid refrigerant returns to it.

The breaker trips or the unit will not start

A breaker that trips at once often means a shorted compressor winding, a grounded fan motor, or a burnt wire at the isolator. A breaker that trips after twenty minutes is more often an overheating compressor or a weak capacitor that makes the motor draw too much current. We measure running current against the nameplate. Holding a breaker in is not a repair. If the compressor is electrically failed, we say so and quote a replacement or a new unit rather than selling a gas top-up.

Noise from the outdoor unit

A metallic scrape is usually the fan blade touching the shroud or a dry fan-motor bearing. A loud buzz with no fan movement is a failed fan capacitor. Short cycling

A unit that starts and stops every few minutes may be oversized, low on airflow, or protecting itself on a high-pressure or freeze fault. Oversizing is an installation issue and will not be cured by gas. A dirty outdoor coil in Industrial Area raises head pressure until the unit cuts out. We wash the coil when that is the cause and only then decide whether a pressure switch or a charge problem remains.
