A thermostat that lies about the room temperature, a unit that starts and stops every few minutes, or a split that ignores the remote are control faults. They are often cheaper than the compressor people fear they have become. Common thermostat and sensor problems

The display does not match the room

Replacing the whole stat without looking at the sensor position is how a new stat fails the same way.

The unit short-cycles

A stat too close to the supply grille, or in a small cupboard, reaches setpoint and stops the unit, then the rest of the room warms and it starts again. The machine is not oversized until the sensor is known to be in the room it is meant to control. We move the sensing point or the stat. If the unit is genuinely far too large for the room, that is an installation fact and we say so. A new stat will not change the capacity.

The stat is on a sunlit wall

Villas in Muwaileh and Al Taawun often have the controller on an outside wall that heats by noon. The unit runs for hours because the stat thinks the room is hotter than it is, or it never rests. Moving it to an interior wall fixes the complaint without a new part. We recommend the move when we see the sun on the casing. The wire length is checked before we promise the new spot.

A drain switch pretending to be a dead stat

On splits, a full pan opens a float switch and the unit will not start. The remote still beeps. People replace batteries and then the remote. The pan is the control. We clear the drain first. On ducted handlers the same switch sits in the ceiling and is blamed on the wall stat. The stat is tested only after that switch is known to be closed.

The remote works and the split does nothing

The receiver board behind the display fails after a drip or a power spike. We test for voltage at the receiver before a handset is sold. A new remote pointed at a dead receiver changes nothing. If the board is the fault, it is quoted against the model plate. Inverter units that show a sensor code need that sensor, not a universal remote.

Wrong mode or a locked setpoint

A unit left in fan mode, or a stat with a keypad lock after a tenant moved out, looks like a failure. We check mode, batteries, and lock codes before parts. This takes minutes. It is still written down so you can see the unit was not faulty. You are not sold a stat for a setting.

A smart thermostat that will not run the handler

Many ducted systems can take a communicating or a simple 24-volt stat. A wall split with an infrared remote cannot. We look at the existing cable. If the wires are not there, a smart stat is a project with a new cable, not a swap. We say that before the box is opened. If the wires match, we fit it, label the old connections, and run a full cycle at the new setpoint.

Heat or burning at the stat

A discoloured backplate means a loose termination or a shorted wire. We isolate power and repair the connection. A stat that is warm to the touch is not left in place. That fault can also be at the handler end of the same cable, so both ends are checked.

Compare the display with a handheld reading. Inspect where the sensor sits. Check the drain safety switch. Then quote a reseat, a reset, or a replacement. After the work the unit runs through a full cycle. We do not leave a stat that we have not watched reach and hold a setpoint.

We will say if the request is outside what the machine can do. Raising the setpoint to a temperature the room can hold stops the short running hours and the complaint that “it never switches off”. That is not a repair. It is the control being used as a control.

Timers and sleep modes on split remotes also produce calls. The unit stops at 1 a.m. because a timer was set in April and never cleared. We clear it and show you the icon. If the same unit stops with no timer and a full pan, we are back to the float switch. The two look identical from the bed. They are not identical on the pan. Bring the remote to the door when we arrive so we are not testing a second handset that was never paired with the wall unit.
